Ionians Alligators v Beverley U11’s
24th January 2010
Due to adverse weather conditions preventing the Alligators from playing, this was their first game back following the Christmas break. A little cold and a little overcast but otherwise a perfect day for a game of rugby, especially a game that was to prove quite rewarding.
Just as predicted, the Alligators came out fully stimulated and ardent for a challenging and dominating game. There was no disappointment as they captivated their supporters and stunned their opponents with an astounding performance from the entire squad.
The Alligators landed their first try in spectacular fashion with a quick thinking dive onto a loose ball just over the try line. It was a brilliant start for the Alligators, and they continued to impress with some excellent rucking and mauling and ball deployment the best seen in a long while.
Beverley tried in vain to edge their way forward and prevent the Alligators from penetrating their defence. They did for a while, with some strong and vengeful tackling, and commitment that cannot be overlooked. The Alligators certainly had their work cut out keeping them at bay, quite often too close to the try line for comfort.
An impressive wing side pass gave the Alligators their second and equally as impressive try with a swiftly executed dash into the top corner and over the try line just short of mercilessly being nudged into touch.
The Alligators went into half time feeling extremely proud, and rightly deserved, and with even more determination to wreak havoc again in the second half.
There were no signs of weary Alligators as the second half got under way. They knuckled down and coasted through another volley of feisty opposition relentlessly trying to restrain the Alligators, but to no avail. An energetic sprint towards the try line followed with a brilliant quick handed slip of the ball out onto the wing to secure another well deserved and brilliantly executed try for the Alligators.
A fantastic flurry of tackles saw to it that Beverley spent more time on the ground than on their feet, often appearing quite dazed by the overwhelming persistence of several key Alligators determined to bring them down. A well fought out scuffle minutes from full time provided the Alligators with their final try of the day. From underneath a pile of opposing players emerged a lone Alligator to sneakily, bravely and with all his might, place the ball over the try line.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Michael Walker for his constant bombardment of carefully executed tackles. At every opportunity Michael pounced on the opposition and brought them hopelessly to the ground. At one point he single handedly brought down three or four Beverley players in rapid succession, leaving them somewhat bewildered and, most importantly, floored. Michaels’ tackling ability has always been a big asset and usually executed to perfection and much acclaim.
